Healthcare providers look out for our mental health, but who is looking out for theirs?
Medical Professionals need a platform that is easy, inexpensive and flexible with their busy schedule in order to better their mental health.
[Your design challenge, framed as a clear “How might we…” question.]
01 / LISTEN FIRST
Conducting the essential research.
Survey
92 Participants
A variety of medical professionals. Including: A surgeon, Physician Resident, Physician Assistant, Physician, Pediatric Resident, Registered Nurse and Dentist in Residency.

Some of our key takeaways. 🔑
🩺 STRONGER TOGETHER
Our users find the most comfort when struggling with their mental health in talking to others in the medical field who they can relate to.
🏃♀️ LEAN INTO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
More than half of our users reported using exercise of some form as a way to easily relieve stress.
😟 THE STRESS IS INHERENT
100% of users said their profession is a burden on their mental health because of the high-stakes nature situations they are often put in, due to the nature of the healthcare industry.
📈 PRIVACY CONCERNS
Wavering mental health could lead to a medical professional being reported to the medical board by their peers.
What are our competitors doing?
User expect a login feature and messaging portal, based on the features of popular products in this field. Though, a reward system is not common from our competitors and could be a delightful surprise to users!
This is where we got the inspiration to add a gamification aspect to ClockOut.
02 / CONNECT THE DOTS
Mapping out early stage features with sketches. 📝
By this point, we knew from our takeaways that elements of physical activity and community with others in the healthcare field would play a major part in the success of ClockOut. We began ideating solutions centered around those ideas - Connecting users with a variety of activities focused around fitness and relaxation.
SKETCHES & EARLY IDEAS

Conflicting insight…
Research shows us that healthcare professionals feel most comfortable confiding in one another about their work-related stresses because they find only other medical professionals can relate or understand.
However, users also appeared wary of sharing their struggles with their mental health with others in their field, for fear of being reported to the medical board.
We knew then that anonymity was going to be key.
03 / MAKE IT TANGIBLE
Polishing our solution with wireframes 🖥️
When it came time to construct the wireframes, I knew our team needed to keep a minimalist approach to the design, so the application isn't overbearing the user with too much information or an overstiulating style.
How do colors affect people?
Color has the ability to heal and comfort (Babin, 2013)
Pastel colors are light, soft and calming (Babin, 2013)
In the medical field, certain colors are used for code of emergencies [ie: code blue, code red] (Babin, 2013)
We kept all of this in mind when selecting colors for our design system.

04 / LEARN, REFINE, REPEAT
How'd we do?
During a series of usability testing, we noticed some common confusions arise that we could expand on in order to make the website more user friendly:
UX Writing
Issue
Users were confused over the phrasing of "Upcoming Activities"
THE FIX
We improved the UX writing by changing the terminology to "Today's Activities". Upon A/B testing, we found this made it more clear that these events were for last minute bookings.

Welcome Page
Issue
Users were unsure what the credits would be used for when interacting with ClockOut
THE FIX
We added text both with an explanation on the welcome page, elaborating that the credits were for booking activities and sessions.

Booking Page 🧾
Issue
It was unclear to users where a class would be located if it were to be attended in person.
THE FIX
This was rectified by adding the class's location to the page. Now users are able to see exactly where the location of an event or class is before committing to attending.
05 / LOOKING FORWARD
What comes next?
What I’m leaving with.
I learned so much about how those who guide our health journeys often suffer in silence with the stress that comes with their professions. Going forward, I hope that we can offer more solutions in tech or otherwise, that support the wonderful people who take care of us in the medicinal world.
